“Oom”: How Meditation Helped Me

“Oom”: How Meditation Helped Me

When I was younger it was easier to focus on the things I enjoyed. As I got older overthinking kicked in and doing things I loved became less and less. I realized I needed to get back to the things I loved and one way I could do that was to learn to refocus on the things that mattered the most. Meditation and visualization really helped me hone in on the things I wanted to do.

At first, I started with ten minutes of meditation a day. I have worked my way up to about thirty minutes without falling asleep or becoming distracted. I listen to guided meditations at night and first thing in the morning I meditate by focusing on the present. My goal is to get a full hour. Here are some ways meditation has helped me.

Breathe in and out: Yes there is a lot of this! I feel this really helps me relax. When I get stressed out, I take a few deep breaths and the situation lessens in intensity or just melts away. The breathing helps me focus on something other than my chaotic thought but the present moment. The sound of my heartbeat, the number of deep breathes I have taken.

Here and now: Meditation helps me anchor to the here and now, rather than worrying about my past or future. Too much of my energy needs to be used upon coming up with new ideas and stories, not past event that makes me feel bad. Nobody got time for that!

Prioritizing what’s important: By focusing on the here and now, I am able to really prioritize what is important in my life. My well being, my writing, my family, my friends! All of these come to mind as I sit and focus. The actions of others that upset me, traffic on the way to work, what needs to get done, what more can I do, all of that doesn’t matter in the moment of meditation. Focusing on the present and being grateful is what I can do that helps make the other thoughts quiet.

Meditation isn’t for everyone and many find their own way to focus. These are the three ways meditation has helped me.

Do you meditate?  How long? What have you learned while meditating?

  1. I tired it many times but it never work that way (inoutdoor) i would have to go in a open field with nature and meditate. Then everything would just zone out.
