My co-worker and I have known each other for about 3 or 4 years when we have downtime at work I arrange the rubber bands she uses to bundle her cash drawer. This would normally happen when I was bored and didn’t have training or reading to do. We would chat a bit while I arranged her rubberbands. We work at a bank and rubber bands aplenty and they always came tangles and sometimes hard to pull apart.
I was moving over a station where I help more of our merchant customers- a little more responsibility. She pointed out that with more responsibility she noticed I won’t have time to arrange the rubberbands for her. I never knew such a small act like that really mattered to her. She has really bad arthritis and its easier for her when the rubber bands are arranged nicely for her to use. It made me realize that the little things may not mean a lot to you at the moment but are a huge thing to others. A smile, opening a door for someone, a compliment or arranging rubber bands goes a long way.
