I first heard about the Secret or the Law of Attraction a little over the year ago and thought it was an interesting concept but felt really skeptical. At the time I was struggling financially, I was consistently getting stressed out, calling out sick from work and overall I wasn’t happy where I was in my life. I discovered the Secret and I felt a weight lifted. It couldn’t be that easy. Thinking it with passion in your heart and believe then receive it? Sounded almost too good to be true. How could it be that easy? So I put it to the test.

Writing out goals: I wrote out my goals in the present tense as if I already have achieved them. This exercise felt silly at first and then I started to really write out the things I wanted. Things I wanted to experience, places I wanted to go, things I wanted to buy. It was like my own wish list to the universe or God.

Visualization: I visualized my goals achieved and how it made me feel.

Gratitude: this exercise was challenging at first. I had to figure out what I was truly thankful for. The essentials, my car, house, my kitty cat, my family, and friends… that list goes on and on.

Be thankful for what you have, you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never have enough.”

-Oprah Winfrey

Changing focus: Focusing on abundance instead of the things I didn’t have. Such as more clothes or outfits, more money, more social life more this or that. I found focusing on the lack that I didn’t have made me stress out. By shifting my focus I found more of the things I had, pop up for often. For example instead of saying Money doesn’t grow on trees. I say Money comes frequently and abundantly. For me this phrase I couldn’t grasp right away. My mind kept saying how? How? I had to shift my focus to not worry about the how but the what. And the how’s seemed to reveal itself. A million dollar idea that pops into your head.

Using my emotions as a gauge: How did I know if I was on track with my goals for all aspects of my life? Do I feel good? I know a funny question to ask. That was a question I had to ask myself. After socializing with certain groups of people did I feel good after? If yes then more good times to be had. If not evaluate and adjust. I found the more I did things I loved doing, the better I felt and the more opportunities would show up to do the things I loved.

I am the master of my own destiny, so I choose greatness and nothing less.”

Following these simple steps on the daily I found myself thinking more of solutions than problems. That literally anything was possible. I really wanted a key holder for our keys and I had mentioned it in passing with my mom. Literally the next week my mom got me a pretty awesome key holder made of beautifully stained beach wood. It was a simple thing I was looking for but something I had been wanting for a while. I find that with larger goals it may take a while. Such as publishing my book. I didn’t know where to start to begin sending out query letters to and my writer friend mentioned to take a look at certain websites.  Sure I could have searched it myself but I had a lot other mental obstacles going on at the time that I wasn’t thinking very clearly. And when she mentioned it I jumped on it.

**Extra- Follow your instincts and trust your gut! I got a notion to check out a small business conference and found it to be a really good idea. I met some pretty awesome small business owners and was able to pick their brain about how they got started and any tips they had. It was a truly great experience. If I second guess myself I find myself not going and experiencing new things. Trusting my gut became more frequent and at work, I have increased my productivity and confidence level as I was able to meet my daily goals.

The more I focused on things I had and wanted the more I got of those things. The clients I met on the daily basis were happy and kind as too before were cranky or rude. By shifting my perspective, even when I experienced a bad event

“Here’s the problem. Most people are thinking about what they don’t want and they’re wondering why it shows up over and over again.”

-John Assaraf

Call it a higher self, God, or the universe I found that the secret has really helped in my daily life. Visualizing a parking spot will open up right next the door of a restaurant or shopping center is a fun exercise for me. Or if I am hungry and need a snack and a client comes in with a box of energy bars to share with my coworkers. Things like this happen on the daily for me.

Now I know that this concept doesn’t work for everyone. Many find it skeptical and need to quantify it. That is okay too. Everyone reaches their goals their own way and in their own time.  There are so many resources out there now that if you want to start your own business and learn a skill or trade you can! I suppose its finding the thing or things that make you happy.

What do you really want out of life? Happiness? What makes you happy? Do that!
